A Bible lies open in the seat of a power wheelchair in an outdoor setting. Fallen leaves in the grass indicate it's autumn.

When the Bible Meets Disability

October 28, 2022 Megan Bean

How we view disability and treat those who live with it matter. And, as with every other life topic or ethical question, our best guide is the Bible . . . All our best intentions and attempts at inclusion will miss the mark unless they grow from and by biblical truths.

Old fallen maple leaves cover the ground, almost completely obscuring the grass. The leaves are dry and brown, with pale undersides.

Coming Unburied

What do you do with the stuff that can't and won't stay buried, yet is still undeniably not what you wanted in your life?

Four sunflowers of varying sizes open in the golden sunlight. The two nearest appear to be inches from the camera. The bright yellow flowers stand out against the green plants of the surrounding field.

Redeemed in Full

October 27, 2021June 1, 2022 Megan Bean

Have you ever questioned whether you're redeemable? Have you nourished hope for an abundant, meaningful life, only to see it decimated by your own sin or failure? Have you looked at the remains and felt sure that, even if something new were to sprout, nothing could ever bloom?

Not Even Rare Disease

February 28, 2020June 1, 2022 Megan Bean

We don’t know just how long and wide and high and deep God’s love for us is until we’ve seen it go with us through suffering – and then conquer pain and death.

“Through Jesus, God invites us to follow Him on an adventure full of His presence and destined to end in our good. When we accept His invitation, we get to experience Him and His work. Along with the hardships, we get to witness and receive His goodness. And despite our losses, we end the journey richer than before.” I’m back! This year has seen quite a bit of growth in my writing and in what I unofficially call my writing ministry. I’ve faced my own insufficiency many times. In fact, the longer I live, the more I realize how limited I am—physically, mentally, and spiritually. 2022 has been quite a year. I’ve been through some rough spots as well as exhilarating ones. A few weeks ago, God gave me an unexpected blessing. Not unwanted or unimaginable, but unasked for and unthought of. While writing this month’s blog post, I was struck by how little the Bible deals directly with disability. It throws us a command or two and a handful of prophecies. But mostly, it tells stories featuring people with disabilities, in which disability is seldom the true focus. October is #PastorAppreciationMonth! If you’re a churchgoer, take a few minutes to thank your pastor for their service and commit to praying for them year-round. Most people who know me know I love horses. One symptom is my decades-old Breyer model horse collection.
